Haarlem
Haarlem is the best destination in the Netherlands when it comes to shopping. Its historic center is full of exclusive home design shops, trendy designer stores, charming antique dealers and curiosity shops and a range of specialist retailers. After a busy day’s shopping you might like to catch your breath at one of the friendly café terraces close to the Grote Kerk or Botermarkt. In addition, Haarlem has a range of interesting museums to offer, such as the Teylers Museum and the Frans Hals Museum.
Amsterdam
With 10,334 shops, 141 galleries, 165 antiques dealers en 26 markets, Amsterdam is without doubt the biggest shopping city in the Netherlands. It is also the most varied. No other city offers such diversity. Time and again you will come across surprising shops, big and small: drinks sellers stocking more than 70 types of whisky, bookshops crammed full of everything from cookery books to children’s books, and countless other shops specializing in a single product, which might be anything from coffee to candies or underwear to kites. Amsterdam is also the place to be if you want to visit a museum, such as the Rijksmuseum, Vincent van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum or the Anne Frank House, to name but a few.
Alkmaar
Alkmaar offers a range of shops and can justifiably describe itself as the second shopping destination of the Netherlands. Everything in this compact town is located close together, which makes shopping a more relaxing experience. The shops also remain open until 9.00 pm on Thursday evenings. In Alkmaar’s charming main shopping streets you will encounter those large familiar stores where you will undoubtedly be able to kit yourself out with a new wardrobe or find a nice gift. But don’t forget the side streets either, because you are bound to find a few gems amongst those smaller, unique shops as well.
